The Hunter Valley produces some of the world’s greatest Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay wines.
Hunter wines are predominantly based on three varieties: Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay. The testing of Montvalley soils showed that these tree varieties were the most suitable for the vineyard. The Hunter valley is world famous for its Semillon variety. The best Semillon in Australia emanates from the Hunter region. Tyrell’s Vat 1 and McWilliam’s Lovedale are amongst the best.
Montvalley’s Semillon is showing great promise for such young vines and will continue to improve with age.
The Hunter Valley now produces excellent Chardonnay and Shiraz, with a number of vineyards producing wine of international quality in both varieties. Montvalley will bottle its first Shiraz in May 2004. Early indications are that the wine will be a typical Hunter Shiraz. Montvalley will harvest its first commercial crop of Chardonnay in 2005 and the first bottles will be available for sale in early 2006.
